El Tico Surfyard
El Tico is an iconic building that is at the heart of Jersey’s surf culture. The original building dates back to 1948 and has been home to surf schools and a hangout point for Islanders for a number of years.
The Owners of El Tico wanted to create the El Tico Surfyard which included a shop, surf school and a place where experienced visitors could hire equipment.
Bamboo worked with architect Richard Le Sueur who designed the building whilst Bamboo bought it to life. The project commenced in January so the weather was against us and we were often caught in gale force 10 winds. We had to keep full access to El Tico the whole time which added an extra challenge to the project.
The structure consists of mainly steel and reclaimed wood which has given it an authentic but sturdy structure whilst keeping it relevant to its surroundings.
The project was completed by Easter just in time for the Surf Yard’s peak season.
For Bamboo, this project holds a special place in our hearts. Being an avid surfer myself it was extremely humbling for us to be involved in the construction of such an iconic building which holds such history for St Ouen and the Islands surf culture as Jersey is the oldest surf club in Europe.
